:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from g3 from the UP -- Fascinating Tale Told by a Variety of Narrators : Rarely do I want to re-read a novel once I’ve finished, but this one is a web of conflicting memories by a family full of unreliable narrators, and I just had to start reading from the beginning again after the last page. If this makes it sound like the book is a difficult read, be assured that it isn’t. It just deftly tells the tale of Charlie Barnes, who he was and aspired to be, through his eyes and those of his wives and kids, each of whom see, remember, and interpret things differently. I have since read reviews and listened to an author presentation where the reviewers and interviewers gave too much away, so I recommend avoiding the same until you read the book. The construction of the narrative is brilliant and the family relatable in many ways. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 12, 2021 )

Yes, the son is named Jake Barnes, famous Hemingway protagonist. This was an immensely satisfying read because it reinforced the power of narrative to ennoble us all. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Karen H. Goodwin -- Joshua Ferris Continues to Amaze Me : Joshua Ferris writes with biting wit while humanizing the characters he's satirizing. It took me a while to figure out what he was doing with this novel, but once I did, I was all in. He's writing so well about universal truths that we'd all be better for if we accepted them. Your truth is not always someone else's truth, and the truth is a pretty gray area especially when it comes to how families view their histories. Ferris often makes me laugh-out-loud, sometimes he makes me sad for the human condition, but this is the first time he's made me cry in the best way ever. If you're in one of those crazy families where everybody doesn't get along, doesn't see eye-to-eye on every topic, and isn't always perfect, you'll get a lot out of this book. Well done Mr. Ferris.
